motors and generators ac/dc

large machines
Large electrical rotating machines and transformers are, by their very nature, critical to any company's operation. They also represent a substantial capital investment.

Sulzer Dowding & Mills recognises the importance of these machines and, with well equipped facilities and experienced technicians, is able to repair them to the highest standards, whilst meeting tight delivery deadlines, cost criteria and quality standards.

scope
The scope of repairs for large electrical machines covers 100 horsepower motors to multi-megawatt AC machines with squirrel cage rotors, wound rotors with slip rings or commutators, salient pole rotors and cylindrical turbo types. In addition, the service covers DC machines up to those used for hot mill roller drives in steelworks, as well as more unconventional machines such as frequency changers, linear motors, liquid metal pump motors and stirrers. Transformers, up to 10 MVA 33kV, are also within the capability of Sulzer Dowding & Mills.

If a machine is too large or it is uneconomical to remove from location, a rewind can be carried out on site. Typically this could be a hydro-generator requiring a core rebuild and rewind to improve efficiency and extend plant life.

repair facilities
Sulzer Dowding & Mills workshops have been designed specifically to provide repair and maintenance services to industry and are amongst the most modern and well equipped in the world.

  • Cranage to 40 tonnes
  • Curing ovens in excess of 36 cubic meters
  • Varnish Tanks up to 22 cubic meters
  • VPI up to 2.5m diameter and 3.5m deep
  • Rotor balancing up to 25 tonnes, 3m diameter, 10m length
  • Presses up to 500 tonnes

The repair services are supported by the most advanced coil manufacturing facility (with its own copper mill) to be found in the repair industry, which together with in-house commutator manufacturing, provides a service capability to customers which is second to none.

experience
The company's workforce is stable and highly qualified to industry recognised standards, with years of experience in high voltage and large machines, covering testing, dismantling, refurbishing, rewinding, and commissioning, both on site as well as in the workshop.

traction motor repairs
Dowding and Mills has over 30 years experience as a specialist in the repair of traction motors for use in lift truck applications, railway traction motors, generators and auxiliary equipment. The skilled workforce is qualified to handle all types of traction motors use in railway systems world-wide.

quality
The quality management system meets the requirements of AS/NZS ISO 9002 1994, for the overhaul and repair of traction generators, motors, auxiliary machines and transformers. This gives customers complete assurance and traceability.

The Company is also a member of the rail industry's approved supplier list, Link-up Supply Chain Services.

small electric motors ac/dc
Sulzer Dowding & Mills is recognised throughout the world as a repairer of large machines. However, the company's core business was developed on small and medium machines. These now form the majority found in all industrial sectors.

At each branch, dedicated personnel and facilities satisfy the needs of the local market, for low voltage, AC and DC motors, permanent magnet servo motors, pumps, geared units, fans and compressors. The capability extends to hazardous area and FLP motor repairs, undertaken by qualified and approved staff, as well as the use of dedicated state-of-the-art test rigs in the rewind and repair of higher efficiency motors.

Remember, not only is the electrical fault corrected but also all mechanical components are checked and if necessary repaired or replaced with new. The machine is only returned to the customer when it has been thoroughly tested and is working to at least its original specification. With Class "F" insulation as a minimum standard, many rewinds are returned to the customer with enhanced service life.

The Dowding and Mills "Round the Clock" service ensures that each repair is collected and returned in the shortest possible time.
